  • After-School Tutorial

Posted by Cassie Hammond at 9/22/2011
Welcome to my page. I just want to remind parents and students alike that I am on campus and in my classroom Monday and Thursday after school until 2:45 each week. Students can also make appointments with me for times other than those hours. I highly encourage students to come in and get clarification on anything they are having trouble with. I can help review tests, edit essays, go over reading questions, or help make up assignments. Please take this opportunity so that your child stays caught up on all the information they are learning this year. Getting behind can make the year a real challenge. It is best to start seeking help now if there are any questions you have.

Once again, my classroom is updated daily at chammondela.tumblr.com.

    Thank you for your support,

  • One Month In!

Posted by Cassie Hammond at 9/14/2011
We are already one month into the school year, and I cannot believe how time is flying! There are a few things that people have emailed me with questions about. I would like to cover some frequently asked questions here.
    •  Homework:
      • Reading Log: Each student should be reading a novel of their choosing for a minimum of 30 minutes each night. If students are having a difficult time choosing a novel, they should speak with me so that we can find them the perfect book. After reading they are to answer a reading response question in their reading journal. These are checked each Friday during class. I have given them a week or two to get used to what is expected, but this will count as 10% of their grade each quarter. The quality of the journal entries should reflect their growth as a reader.
      • TeenBiz3000: Each student has a TeenBiz3000 account. This is a dynamic online reading program that grows with your child. It is very important that they complete a minimum of 2 articles each week. We have seen great results with this program and many students enjoy it. All students should be familiar with the 5-step process for completing an article, this includes both the multiple choice activity and the thought question. If your child has difficulty with Internet access, the school library is open until 2:45 each day for this purpose and the public library has access as well. If there are circumstances that make this impossible, please have your children speak with me so alternate arrangements can be made.
    • Grades: Grading in my classroom work son a longer timeline then students may be used to. We work in longer, project-based units. This means that grade updates are not quite as frequent as they may be in other classes. Language Arts at this level requires that students explore for depth, there are assignments coming up for both 7th and 8th grade; they have been posted to the homework section of this website.
If you are curious about what we are doing daily in the classroom, please visit chammondela.tumblr.com. This site provides your student with access to our classroom content daily.

  • Welcome to Mrs. Hammond's Class!

Posted by Cassie Hammond at 8/23/2011 7:00:00 AM
Hello and welcome to the new school year! I am excited for the upcoming year and I can't wait to get started.

There is a lot of information to share at the beginning of the school year, and this website will help you if you forget things or lose any handouts. I recommend bookmarking this site so that it is easy to get the information when you need it. I also have a class Twitter feed, you can subscribe if you have a Twitter account, or just bookmark the link and you can view the feed without having a Twitter account.

Please feel free to contact me through the website with any questions.

  • Homework Changes

Posted by Cassie Hammond at 3/27/2011
    Attention Parents and Students!

Due to  the rapidly approaching CST season, there will be some changes in our classroom homework routine. For the next several weeks students will not receive a weekly spelling list. Students will instead receive a homework test prep sheet on Monday and Wednesday. Students should complete the worksheet to the best of their ability and be prepared to discuss the answers in class the next day. Homework will not be due at the end of the week, but will be collected the next day.  All worksheets will be uploaded to this website as well, in case of absences.

Students are still required to complete two TeenBiz3000 articles each week for homework. These are checked on Sunday evening. Students will receive the greatest benefit from this program if they work weekly to complete the articles. They may search and choose any article they prefer, but remember that each article can only be completed once. TeenBiz3000 is a multiple step process. After reading the article, students should complete both the multiple choice activity and the thought question. Many students are skipping the thought question, which means that they are not getting everything that they could be out of the program. Students must score at least 60% for the article to count, so I encourage them to go back and reread to make sure they have chosen the correct answers.

As always, please contact me with any questions at chammond@nuview.k12.ca.us

  • Have you read the Hunger Games?

Posted by Cassie Hammond at 2/22/2011 1:00:00 PM
I have! I adored it.... and then I kept reading. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the first of a trilogy of novels. Books two and three are Catching Fire  and Mockingjay. I could not put down these novels and I am currently on pins and needles waiting for more information about the upcoming films. I highly recommend these books to everyone who enjoys a good action story with plenty of romance thrown in.

Katniss is a spectacular heroine. Her struggle throughout the trilogy keeps you guessing and I would often find myself staying up way to late just to see if Katniss would prevail. There is incredible action throughout all three of the novels for those of you who enjoy a nail biting action flick. For those who prefer to sigh over a moving love story, the triangle of Katniss, Peeta, and Gail will have you swooning. I personally rallied for Team Peeta! I suggest that you read the books and enjoy the story now, because it is only a matter of time before the books are flying off the library shelves!
